eSIM guide
How to install an eSIM on Android
Android manufacturers use different names and menu paths for eSIM setup. The sequence is similar: connect to the internet, add a downloaded SIM, scan or enter the plan details, and select the new line for mobile data when you are ready to connect.
Prepare your phone and plan details
- Confirm that the exact model and regional variant supports eSIM, not just the broader product family.
- Check that the phone is unlocked for use with another provider.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi and keep the QR code or manual details available on another device if possible.
- Review what starts the plan validity before installing.
- Keep your existing SIM in place; you can choose which line handles each service later.
Find the eSIM setup menu
On a Google Pixel, the route is commonly under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM. On a Samsung Galaxy, it is commonly under Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Other manufacturers may use labels such as Mobile network, SIM cards, Download a SIM, or Mobile plan. Settings search can help you find “eSIM” or “SIM manager.”
These labels can change between Android versions and device makers. If no add or download option appears, verify the model’s eSIM support and carrier status before assuming the QR code is faulty.
Install the profile
- Choose the option to add or download a SIM or eSIM.
- Scan the supplied QR code when prompted.
- If scanning is unavailable, use the manual entry option and copy the provider details exactly.
- Approve the download and wait for Android to show the new plan in SIM settings.
- Label it “Travel” or use the destination name so you can distinguish it from your home line.
If Android reports that the code is already in use, first check whether the profile was added despite the message. Avoid deleting it or repeatedly scanning a potentially single-use code. Contact supportif the plan is absent.
Configure mobile data at your destination
- Enable the travel eSIM in SIM settings.
- Choose it as the preferred SIM for mobile data.
- Enable roaming on the travel line if required by the plan instructions.
- Keep roaming disabled on your home line if you want to reduce the risk of home-carrier roaming charges.
- Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and open a webpage to test the mobile connection.
Dual-SIM options such as automatic data switching, backup calling, or switching mobile data automatically can use another line when the preferred line is weak. Review those options based on your home carrier’s roaming terms.
If Android shows signal but no internet
Confirm that the travel eSIM is selected for data, roaming is set as instructed, and any required APN matches the plan details. Then briefly use airplane mode or restart the phone. Network selection should normally remain automatic unless the plan instructions name a supported network to select manually.
Follow the ordered checks in the eSIM troubleshooting guide before removing the profile. Deletion can make recovery harder if the profile does not support reinstallation.
